S1 Ep:5 Space Titan

ROSCOSMOS

ROSCOSMOS

Introduction

The Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities, commonly known as Roscosmos, established on 25 February 1992, is a state corporation of the Russian Federation responsible for space flights, cosmonautics programs, and aerospace research. Do you know the Russian Space agency is still here? You have doubts, let us find out with us.

It was also the first space agency in the whole world to send a person to space while also being the first to send a woman to space, Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova. It is also famous for cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who was the first-ever person to perform a spacewalk. All the while being famous for sending animals to space too. As the main successor to the Soviet space program, Roscosmos' legacy includes the world's first satellite, first human spaceflight, and the first space station. Its current activities include the International Space Station, wherein it is a major partner. On February 22, 2019, Roscosmos announced its new headquarters in Moscow, the National Space Centre.

Valentina Tereshkova

When the Soviet rocket development program was initiated in 1946, the Ministry of Armaments specialized in artillery systems took charge of the emerging rocket field. The Soviet aviation industry also joined in, overseeing some types of rocket technology, such as cruise missiles and propulsion systems. In addition, various other Soviet institutions, from radio-electronics to naval organizations, had to get involved in a new multi-disciplinary field, which had an exclusively military nature. However, with the launch of Sputnik in 1957, a new era dawned, marking the emergence of a civilian space program with a distinct set of goals and institutions involved in its production. However, orders for the development of spacecraft were still formulated by the State Committee for Defense Technology, GKOT, to produce military systems.

Alexei Leonov

In 1963, Sergei Zverev became the head of GKOT and initiated plans to form a civilian space ministry in the USSR. In March 1965, in the wake of Khrushchev's ouster, the new government in the Kremlin implemented reorganization and centralization of the industry, forming specialized ministries to oversee various technology fields. Among them was the new Ministry of General Machine-building, MOM, to oversee the rocket and space field. A joint decree of the Soviet Ministers and the Central Committee of the Communist Party for the formation of MOM was signed on March 2, 1965.

Moon Mission

Yuri Gagarin

China and Russia are now officially getting to build a search station together on the moon. There were hints of their plans to try to do so as early as 2017 when People’s Daily reported the likelihood. But, on March 9, 2021, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) eventually announced a formal memorandum, which also gave the bottom its name: the International Lunar Research Station. A definitive target deadline hasn’t yet been shared with the general public, but it’s an ambitious plan. And, it’s rumored that China wants its moon base settled before 2031.
This date could be overzealous, taking into count the speed at which space exploration missions tend to be plagued with delays, but China appears to be fully committed, and it seems that Russia is, too. China sat out the famous 1960s space race between the Soviet Union and the U.S., which ultimately launched the primary humans to the moon in 1969. But, in recent years, Russia’s program has been ongoing, and China has been making up for a lost time. China has launched several robotic missions to the moon, and Mars also has successfully landed on the moon’s far side, making it the sole country to accomplish that feat. More recently, China’s sample return mission from the moon made history because of the incredible speed at which the country landed, collected samples, and shot them back to space. Meanwhile, Tianwen-1 may be a Chinese probe that entered Mars orbit on February 10, 2021; it’s set to land a rover on Mars’ surface this might or June. NASA has plans for a person's presence on the moon also.
It involves the Gateway project, which NASA labels an “outpost” orbiting the moon, designed to supply vital support for a sustainable, long-term human return to the lunar surface, as well as a staging point for region exploration. The gateway may be a critical component of NASA’s Artemis program, which – under the Trump administration – was said to be scheduled to send astronauts to the lunar surface by 2024 (although delays in developing necessary technologies, alongside the pandemic, has made that date seem unlikely). The goal of Artemis is to determine a long-term, sustainable human presence on and around the moon by the top of this decade.
All indications thus far are that Artemis 1, an uncrewed flight, remains scheduled for launch in November 2021 from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. That’s despite a reported component failure on the cone-shaped Orion capsule, the vehicle that ultimately will carry astronauts back to the moon. Moreover, NASA isn’t developing Artemis alone and has dealt with several private sector partners. In fact, 8 other nations have signed the Artemis Accords, which reserves participation within the program. In due course, Brazil’s government has indicated to sign the Accords also.

Bottom line: China and Russia are getting to build a search station on the moon. On March 9, 2021, the proclamation was made online by the China National Space Administration and Roscosmos, Russia’s federal space agency. They’re calling it the International Lunar Research Station. It’s rumored that the aim date for completion is 2031.

Conclusion

While being one of the most powerful superpowers globally, Russia is equally active in exploring and discovering space. While having many achievements in its bag, including sending the first person to space, Roscosmos is not behind all its other competitors. Considering its current predicament, they might want to recover back to their former glory and once again be the foremost in space exploration. Do you know Roscosmos is still here? This question is solved for suggestion comment down. With this, Episode 5 is over.
Next, we will be onto Roscosmos' current partner.
